How-to open a Ipod G4 without real tools

This will void your warranty of your Ipod. So do not do it if you still have warranty left.

One of my Ipod G4 (20GB) stopped working after a fall to a hard wood floor. I read some stuff about slapping it to get it to work, it did not do it.

So i decided to open it. This Portugese page describes how-to open a G3 Ipod. I tried it on my Ipod but the G4 seemed to have different hinges. This C-net page is about 1st and 2nd generation Ipods.

I used a simliar teqnique to the Portugese page, two guitar picks and an OLD credit card (that broke).

You need an G4 Ipod, two guitar picks and an OLD credit card.

Open G4 Ipod
Squeeze the guitar picks in between the metal and plastic on both sides. I used some sand paper to make the guitar picks extra thin.

Open G4 Ipod
Insert the credit card in the opening and push it down all along the side of the Ipod. The Ipod hinges will release.

My HDD wasn’t working on my iPod. I was receiving that iPod with an exclimation mark and a sad face. This usually refers to either a software update is needed or a hard drive failure. My warranty was up so I had nothing to lose. Thanks to the Illustrated images I was able to open up my iPod. What I found inside was a loose micro screw that was comfortably magnitized to the HDD. Do to this little screw which came loose from the fire wire port of the iPod my HDD did not work. I replaced the screw in it’s original positon and everything works just great now. Saved my self a few dollars and lots of lost hours reinstalling 15GB of music

    Thanks and good luck!
