How can a digital camera have different ISO settings
I take a lot of pictures and have a digital slr. People often ask me how it is possible to change the sensitivity of the camera, the ISO setting.
There is a pretty good explanation at cambridgeincolour.com. A good analogy that most could relate to is the recording level of a microphone. If you try to record something far away or something very quiet you will increase the recording level. If you increase it a lot you will get all kind of noise even if it is almost completely quiet. The signal to noise ratio will get too low.
The latest generation of Canon digital SLRs, 1Ds MKII, 20D and 5D, have fantastic signal to noise ratio. Better than film.
